What is chemotherapy like

How long do you have to stop in hospital with chemo

  • Hello,

I had my first chemo on 5 September and was there about 4.5 hours, although with it being my first one it took a little longer than it normally will, and also I'm cold capping so I was there longer for that :)

  • Hi

I had 2 chemo sessions within 6 weeks of radiotherapy treatment

The chemo sessions for me were all day from 8-30am until about 4pm. it consisted of having a canular put in then over the hours about 6 bags of different fluids put in canular. Fluids vary from anti sickness, salts to chemo bag to salts etc the staff will advise.

  • Hi,

My first treatment took a few hours, but the subsequent ones took an hour for the bag of fluid containing magnesium and potassium, and another hour for the bag of chemo.

  • How did you find the cold cap? My first session is in two weeks and I've said I will try it even though I've heard a lot of people don't stick with it.

  • I don't have a problem with it at all, very manageable. Unfortunately I've lost about 70% of my hair and have shaved it off! It wasn't as traumatic as I expected really. Best of luck with it!

  • Hi there

It depends on what sort of chemo you’re having ( sorry if you’ve said this and I’ve missed it).

My husband has been having chemo since May for pancreatic cancer. He has his blood tests each Monday then his chemo infusion on a Tuesday. They weigh him, ask him questions about how he’s feeling, side effects etc then check his blood test results then give him a 15 minute saline flush ( through a cannula) and some steroid tablets. Then a 30 minute Gemcitabine infusion then a 5 minute saline flush to finish with - so it usually takes just over about 2 hours all together.

Hope this helps and best of luck

    Jackie
