Laparoscopy

My dad was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in July.  He’s been undergoing tests before starting treatment (which will be chemo then surgery) with a positive outcome expected.  Today he had a laparoscopy which we understood was to check his stomach but he was told after the procedure that a sample of his liver had been taken too.   Wondering if this is standard procedure as it hadn’t been mentioned at any of his appointments and we are a bit worried - dad didn’t ask why it had been done…..

  • Hello CF73

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad was recently diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. It's understandably a worrying time for you all.

It's good to hear that the plan is for chemo and surgery with a positive outcome expected.

It's not uncommon for further tests to be requested after an initial diagnosis but if you have any concerns about this biopsy then you could always call his cancer nurse specialist for some clarification about this.

Hopefully, your Dad will have all his results soon and the team will have the information they need to move forward with a treatment plan.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
