Ibandronic Acid side effects

Hi

I have been prescribed Ibandronic Acid as a preventative measure after being successfully treated for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.  I am very apprehensive about side effects as I had such a tough time on chemo and am afraid all of those symptoms will return.

Also I've been told I need to take it in tablet form on a daily basis, which, given the regime of having to wait an hour before being able to eat/drink/lie down or take other meds, is causing quite a lot of stress for me and will have a major impact on my daily life.  I understand that infusions are an option, but this option hasn't been given to me yet.

So, am guessing I have a few questions:

Has anyone taken Ibandronic acid and how have they coped?

How do I broach the subject of having 6-monthly infusions rather than tablets with my oncologist?  Do I have the right to ask?

Thank you

  • Hello Carol1964

I'm sorry to hear about all that you've been through recently. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about how this new line of treatment may impact you.

I'd certainly contact your hospital team and ask to talk through your concerns with someone. It may be that there is a preferable clinical reason that they have prescribed tablet medication or it may be that the option of a six-monthly infusion is something that they can offer you. Just be open and honest about your concerns and hopefully, they will be able to offer you some reassurance.

It's understandable that having had a tough time with chemotherapy side effects you're worried about the side effects of this medication. It's important to remember that not everyone experiences side effects in the same way and if there are things you struggle with the hospital team may be able to offer support to help ease these symptoms. Do chat this through with your Oncology team.

If you think it may help to tall with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
