Coping with Mum's diagnosis

My Mum has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and starts her chemo this week - i don't know what to expect? what can i do in advance to support her and have everything she may need ready?

  • Hello RossoMum

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis. It's understandable that you may have some concerns and questions ahead of her chemotherapy treatment starting next week.

We have some information about lung cancer which you may find helpful to read through as well as some useful information for family, friends, and carers

Perhaps chat with your Mum about anything that she may be able to think that she may want or need help with over the coming weeks. It could be practical jobs such as shopping, meal prep, or cleaning. It may be that your Mum would like some company or magazines/books for while she is going through her treatment session or when she is at home recovering.

Hopefully some of our community members who have supported loved ones through treatment will reply to share their experiences with you but if you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to give them a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your Mum's treatment sessions run smoothly. Don't be afraid to contact the hospital team or cancer nurse specialist if either of you have any questions or concerns while she is undergoing chemotherapy.

Sending you both my best wishes,
