Prostate Cancer - Surgery or Brachytherapy

I was diagnosed about 4 months ago age 54, my consultants have suggested that I could have surgery or Brachytherapy. The consultant are for surgery because of my age but I am concerned of the side effects like incontinence and erection which the consultant confirmed can be rectified. I prefer brachytherapy but I am concerned of the  effects of the radiation damage other cells or tissue in the area.

I am aware that all treatments have side effects, and cancer may return., but how bad are the side effects on either of these treatments.

  • Hi 1olly,

    a warm welcome.

Two years since I was diagnosed, Gleason 5+4, T3A, I wasn't given many options only that they would treat in situ, seem to remember he did refer to the kitchen sink!

Started 3 yrs of 6 monthly hormone injections in July 22, I had HDR in Dec 22 and 25 sessions of external deam radiation in Jan 23.

I have not had any incontinence and managed to get an erection with Viagra after the HDR. I have invested in a pump and did manage a few times by injecting myself but unfortunately I'm now on hormone treatment since October and have had no success.

I felt no ill affects from the HDR, but then it was only a month until I started the external beam.

My cousin in his 70s had his removed, uses a pump and Tadalafil, tells me his sex life has never been so good!!
