Given 6 months

How do other people deal with the prognosis of “you only have six months “. My wife and I went to the pub, then went home, danced sang and cried, a lot… Is this normal? I was given this on 4th July

  • Hi Martin,

In your situation, there is absolutely no such thing as a normal reaction.
We all react differently and sometimes our reactions seem inconsistent - even to ourselves.
Many of us experience anticipatory grief - often for the family milestones we know we probably won’t live to see.

Just remember that any prognosis we’re given is always only an average and none of us are average. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard health professionals warned in conferences that making these sort of statements is dangerous as the statistics only work for large cohorts of patients and they shouldn’t ever be applied to individual patients. We all pressure them for an opinion and average stats are all they have available.

    Good luck!
    Dave

  • Thanks Dave, you’re right, I did put the pressure on for an answer when she told me there was no treatment.
