Fear of chemotherapy

Is anyone else terrified of treatment ? My first round of chemo was horrendous ,i ended up in hospital for 6 days

Im now frightened of this  happening again

  • Hello Caronickie

I'm sorry to hear that you were hospitalised after your first round of chemo treatment. it sounds like that was a very difficult and scary time for you. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about the rest of your treatment.

Please do talk to your clinical nurse specialist or oncology team about your fears. It may be that they plan to adjust your treatment plan to try and mitigate the problems that you experienced last time. Hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can.

I do hope that things are easier for you moving forward.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Caronickie

I too had a major allergic reaction to my first round of chemo.  It happened within seconds of starting treatment and they had to halt it immediately and call in the emergency team.  I wasn't hospitalised on that occasion.  They changed my chemo drug for the next session and it was infused over a longer period (1 hour rather than the standard 30 minutes) plus they gave me an anti histamine cocktail beforehand and I tolerated that much better.  I still had some pretty bad side effects but I always kept my oncologist informed and each time he came up with an alternative plan such as diluting the chemo.  Never be afraid to tell your team how you're feeling.  They will always find a pathway that's right for you.

All the best for your next session.  I hope it goes much smoother for you.

    xx

  • I have not had chemo yet but fear what the treatment might do. I have had daily tablets previously so this is into the unknown. In God I trust

  • Hi,

Yes treatment is scary. So many potential side effects. I just had my first round of chemo and got very nauseous, so not even as bad as your story, but it scares me for round 2 tomorrow. But I agree with Carol1964, I feel well supported and I don't think any treatment team will allow the same issue twice. They're on the ball, bless them.vAnyway, good luck and stay positive.
