Cervical- just diagnosed- 33 yrs old- what’s next?

Hello,

im just curious to see if anyone is in a similar position to me or is a bit further along and wants to give me any advice on what to expect etc.

a bit more about my situation is that since January I’ve had symptoms- lots of discharge and bleeding- I attended gp immediately and was referred and seen my a consultant who told me I had ectropian of the cervix and not suspicious and discharged me.

issues persisted so I used private healthcare through my work and saw a consultant thinking I needed some treatment for the erosion. He did a colposcopy first as he noted nhs had not done any biopsies. The colposcopy went terribly and he sat me down after and told me he thought I had cancer but we needed to wait for biopsies and he hoped he was wrong. I got the biopsy results and it is cervical cancer on 5th July Friday

I know my consultant referred me on the two week pathway before the results even came in on Tuesday 2 July. I’ve not heard anything yet. He assures me it’s all treatable and he hopes caught early. Wt’s next? The limbo and waiting is terrible. He mentioned likely treatment is hysterectomy. Which I guess I’d be fine with if I must as I’ve never been entirely set on having children. I’m really scared about needing chemo though. Also I’m terrified of my vagina being affected, like if they take my cervix and womb, please let me keep my vagina argh. My mind is a complete mess. I just want to be ok

  • Hello Dolorescat,

It's encouraging that you've been assured it's treatable, but I can understand waiting can be stressful. When youre worried about cancer, it can be natural to think of the worst scenarios, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. On our website, there's a lot of information on cervical cancer, which you can refer to whenever you wish, but you won't know more until you talk through next steps with your doctor. Try to focus on other things for now and hopefully you won't have to wait too long.

    All the best to you,

  • Hi i was diagnosed on July 4th after have normal smears but carry hpv virus after leep treatment as investigation i have been told ive got stage 1b1 cervical cancer i haven’t been told anything except i need a mri scan to confirm stage before i get a treatment plan its been nearly a week and i haven’t got an appointment yet the waiting is sending me crazy i hope your not waiting to long

hope all goes well for you

  • Hiya, not sure if I can help, x things normally move pretty fast one diagnosed..I was given an mri lst, then had meeting with surgical team, I was diagnosed feb, hysterectomy march back to work end April..being that I had my kids hysterectomy didn’t worry me, everything depends on stage and grade I think to what treatment is offered..I didn’t need chemo, just hysterectomy, I know u must be pretty scared right now, but take a deep breath, once ur appointment is here u can discuss everything with ur team..not all cancers need chemo, get ur results then take each day as it comes. Cancerchat is a good place for advice and talk about how u feel, xx

  • I’m so sorry to hear you’re in a similar position. I do hope you get an appt soon. I absolutely know what you mean about waiting and it sending you crazy.

I ended up ringing the trust I had been referred to on Monday and they had already arranged an appt for me which is tomorrow. It’s actually a good thing I rang as I never received a letter!

hopefully I will know more tomorrow- I hope, but all so scary.

  • Hello. Thank you so much for telling me a bit about how it went for you. I’m glad everything went fast for you and it sounds like you’re on the other side of it now.
I will do my best and take lots of deep breaths xx

  • That’s all u can do xx this is one problem we cannot fix for ourselves sadly, ur be in good hands. I really wish u the very best, personally I don’t think il ever be the person I was before diagnosis but I’m just happy to be here xx ur be ok

  • That's NHS letters for you. You'll come back tomorrow from your appointment and find the letters there. Happens all the time with wife. Can't remember the last time she received the letter before her appointment day. If you ever think you have been told you are being seen before a certain date or within a certain time frame, always call them. The chances are the letter is late.
