Melanoma in lymph nodes - any stories please

My Dad has been diagnosed with Melanoma in his lymph nodes following a biopsy on a lump in his groin.the consultant hasn’t been able to find the primary source of the melanoma and a CT scan has been done. Obviously we know it’s spread as it is in his lymph nodes but without the scan we have no idea where from or how bad the spread is. We have been told it will be another week or more until we get any results (it’s already been over a week since the scan now), we are just so worried.

does anyone have any positive stories following melanoma in lymph nodes and no other symptoms whatsoever….

  • Hi,

Yes, I have experience of melanoma in my lymph nodes.

My primary was a mole on my shin in 1996. After removal and 5 years of check ups I was discharged. Unfortunately I found a lump in my groin in 2009 & a fine needle biopsy confirmed that the primary had spread. In those days the only treatment was a full node clearance after a pre-op scan. My surgeon (on a hunch) decided to also remove the nodes in my pelvis. A micro amount of melanoma was found in a pelvic node as well as the macro amount in the groin node.

These days patients also get adjuvant drug treatment which is showing great success, so more Stage 3 patients are clear of melanoma than they were years ago.

I'm still here, fit & healthy,15 years later. Although your dad's melanoma is from an unknown primary, it won't affect the treatment he will receive. Quite often the primary has regressed (due to the immune system attacking it) but it's usually after a cell will have already broken away and travelled through the lymphatic system & lodged in the lymph node.

I've sent you a friend request - if you accept it we can chat some more by private message. Hopefully your dad's scan results won't take much longer & they will put together a treatment plan as quickly as possible.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hi Angie,

How are you?  You’ve been a marvellous support to myself and others and I must thank you for taking the time and effort to reply offering hope and positivity. It’s an unknown quantity and the secret is to remain as positive as you can. It may seem ridiculous but I’m excited about getting into hospital this week and look forward to being completely rid of this cancer!  I’ve always been the eternal optimist and that really helps.
    cheers.

  • Thank you so much it’s so nice to hear a really positive story.

i have accepted your friend request

  • Hi

we are in the same position as you with my Dad, his biopsy results from a lump in his leg showed melanoma in the lymph nodes but no idea where the primary is.

he also feels well and fit. We are awaiting results from his CT scan which feels like an eternity!!

What were the next steps once you heard about your CT scan, did your scan show up much? We are not sure what to expect to be honest…
