Surprise diagnosis

After having minimal surgery for a large cyst (ovary and cyst removal only not the whole reproductive system) it turns out that I have clear cell ovarian cancer. Nobody expected the cyst to be cancer. I don’t know what to think. I feel great after losing the cyst. I’ve had terrible low mood and being off HRT is a nightmare. Is there a way through this?

  • Hello Htheterrible

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had surgery and that following this you were told that the cyst was cancerous. It sounds like it was a surprise to you and to your care team.

It's understandable that you are experiencing some side effects from the surgery and no longer being on HRT. Please speak to your GP about the symptoms you're having as there may well be other options to help with low mood, hot flashes, etc. Do you know if you will need to have any further treatment? Hopefully the hospital team will be able to give you some reassurance.

If it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can.

Do keep in touch Htheterrible and let us know how you're getting on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Jenn. Waiting on a CT scan date. I think they will have to operate again as I had minimal surgery the first time. I’m terrified.

  • Hello Htheterrible

It's understandable that you're feeling so worried at the moment. We do have some tips and advice about waiting for news that you may find helpful but I'd also really encourage you to reach out for some support. Don't be afraid to lean on the family and friends around you during this difficult time.

It may be that you reach out to your GP for some support and help. Or it could be that there's an organisation such as Maggie's in your local area that you can attend. If you've been given contact details for a clinical nurse specialist, do give them a call. You can also give our nurses a call. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support they can.

Keep in touch Htheterrible and let us know when you have some news about your CT scan. Hopefully, it won't be too long.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks Jenn. I think I’ve done much of what you advise and you’re right, it does help. Just have to wait my turn.
