How long for surgery? Guilty for taking time off work

Hi all,

I recently diagnosed with a lung carcinoid tumor. I am meeting with the surgeon next Tuesday and I am wondering roughly how long between meeting the surgeon and setting a date for surgery? Will it be days or weeks? I am still going in to work but it is getting a bit much for me now and I would ideally like to sign off under sick leave now but I have a feeling of guilt in case the surgery doesn’t happen for a while and it will look like I’m just skiving off if that makes sense. Would be great to hear other peoples experiences of how to deal with it, what would you do etc.

Thank you.

  • Hi I would do what's best for yourself ,I wouldn't even give work a second thought especially when you're having surgery for a serious illness ,that's what I would do and I would expect work colleagues to get behind you 100% ,and I wouldn't feel guilty ,I hope all goes well during your surgery .

  • Hi Jenny, thanks for the kind words! Just feel so guilty for taking time off when I still don’t have a date for the surgery. Don’t know what it is but can’t help it. I’ve been in and out of work between appointments etc but think I might just bite the bullet and take some time off for myself. If the surgery is more than 2/3 weeks away, I can always go back before it
