MRI appointment brought forward after blood tests

Hi,

My sister has recently been diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer and we are now in the testing stages but unsure of a few things.

She was told that she has an aggressive form of breast cancer however looking around for what that means, there’s a lot of conflicting information.

My sister then has had blood tests and has been scheduled in for CT scans, ECG and MRI

This morning she had a call from the doctors saying that her MRI has been brought forward due a lot earlier as it needs to be done asap. What does this mean?

Of course my sister is now worried as she thinks something has been found in the blood results and just hasn’t been told.
We know that the cancer has spread j to her lymph nodes but not sure how many.

Could this be a sign that we need to prepare for the news the cancer has spread and if it has, does this automatically mean she would be stage 4?

any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

  • Hello Castlevie247

I'm sorry to hear that your sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. It's naturally a worrying time for you all and understandable that you have questions about what this may mean for her.

It's not uncommon for test dates to changed to please don't try to read too much into the fact that the MRI date has been brought forward. I also want to try and offer some reassurance that if the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes this does not automatically mean her diagnosis is stage 4.

We know that for many people this period of uncertainty and waiting can be difficult. It may help to talk things through with one of our nurses who hopefully can give you some advice, information, and support that will answer some of your questions and concerns. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully, she won't have to wait too long for some answers from the clinical team responsible for her care and they will be able to give you all some reassurance about the next steps.

Do keep in touch and let us know how she gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for getting back to me Jenn, it’s really appreciated.

my sister has now had a clip put on I think tumour, and just needs to have an MRI on Monday. She has been called to say that she needs to attend an appointment with the consultant on Tuesday, which of course has got her worried, however I have said that this is good as it means the treatment will happen sooner.

Today when she got back from the hospital she had confirmation that she has grade 3 breast cancer which I’ve looked online and it basically confirms about it being an aggressive form of breast cancer, but as far as we are aware she is still at stage 1, but we’ll find out from the scan results if there is anything to worry about.

she is down of course but I’m chatting to her all the time, one of the things that seemed to have happened is she has gone up in weight, she hasn’t lost her appetite but I’m sure that will come when she starts treatment.

I’ll update you with the results on Tuesday, she doesn’t know how to use things like forums so I’ve said I’ll jump on if she needs me to, to ask any questions.

    thanks,

    mike
