MPN diagnosis given

I was yesterday diagnosed with MPN and I have agreed to the bone marrow biopsy in the near future. I had never heard of this type of cancer and have been put on hydroxycarbamide.

First of all are there any other persons out there with MPN and has anybody had the bone marrow biopsy, as Im a bit nervous about it.

Thanks

  • Hello MJC

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with MPN. It's understandable that you're feeling nervous about this news and what it may mean for you in the future.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a group of different blood cancers. The three main types are polycythaemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythaemia (ET) and myelofibrosis and I know that we have members here on the forum living with all three types. Once you have some more information about your diagnosis hopefully we can try and put you in touch with others who have the same diagnosis.

In the meantime, you might want to have a look at the Blood Cancer UK website for the information that they have about MPNs as well as the information available on our website about Myeloproliferative neoplasms.

I know that we have members here who have shared their experiences with hydroxycarbamide. You can find some of these posts by entering the term into the search box at the top of the page. There's also some information available about this treatment on our website.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

I hope that the hospital team is able to offer you some support and reassurance before and after your biopsy. Do keep in touch MJC and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
