Starting treatment

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 3 weeks ago. He’s had all the scans and biopsies but is yet to see the oncologist and start treatment. He is extremely anxious and can see him mentally deteriorating, he just wants to start his treatment to know something is being done. His worry is that each day he goes without treatment, the worse the cancer gets and will spread further. How long do people generally wait from diagnosis to actually starting treatment? And is he likely to see an improvement in his cough, lack of energy and night sweats?

  • Hi Lauraj87,

I can understand that this uncertainty must be difficult for him - and you - to deal with. It would best to give his doctor a call if you can - it's really important that you have some idea what to expect in terms of timescales for treatment, and they would be best placed to advise.

It would also be a good opportunity to ask any questions you have about his symptoms, particularly if you are concerned about anything.

Our nurses are also available if you want to talk anything through, although they won't be able to advise specifically with regards to medical opinions. If you'd like to speak to one of them, you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

I hope you hear more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
