Polycythaemia vera

Hi, this morning I saw a registrar who said in their opinion it was 90% confident that I have polycythaemia vera. I have been receiving venesection and for the next four weeks they are going to be weekly.

It has been a whirl wind and a mixture of emotions. Feeling dizzy only 5 weeks ago and putting that down to not eating breakfast early enough, to seeing a doctor and now being treated for polycythaemia vera.

Nice to hear from anyone who may have experienced something similar.

  • Welcome to the forum, Pompey77.

I'm sorry to hear that the registrar you saw said they're 90% confident you have polycythemia vera. It's completely normal to feel a whirlwind of emotions when receiving unexpected news like this. Receiving treatment and adjusting to a new diagnosis can indeed be overwhelming.

Many others in similar situations can relate to the mix of emotions you're experiencing and I hope you'll get to chat with some of them here soon. The other thing I wanted to add, is that you have a page on our website that covers polycythaemia vera (PV) in case you feel like having a read.

Altso, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to chat with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

Stay strong, Pompey77 and please remember we're always here if you need a chat.

    Best wishes,
