Cancerous colon polyp

Yesterday I was told that a polyp I had removed was cancerous. I am to have a MRI scan before the team meet to decide on surgery or surveilance. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I understand that only 5 to 10% of colon polyps are cancerous so I wondered what the percentage of treatment is re surgery or surveilance ?I don't want surgery but I don't really understand how the alternative works.

  • Hello MarlboroughLemcon

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been told that a polyp that was removed was cancerous. it's understandable that you may be feeling anxious and have lots of questions about the possible next steps.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be very difficult. I wonder if it may help you to have a chat with one of our nurses ahead of your next appointment. I'm sure they will be happy to offer some information, advice, and support as well as help you think about the questions that might want to ask the team. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you have some news soon. Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there, sorry to jump in on your thread late but i've just joined and your thread related to me so much. I had same last September, polyps removed for biopsy from a colonoscopy, officially diagnosed in October with stage 3 colo-rectal cancer, at 37yrs old, not happening.

I have been given treatment then surgery route as MDT decided MRI scan showed it had spread to lymph nodes. Surveillance will be more scans to make sure it's not growing or to double check it's aggression because that will give MDT idea on what treatment plan you will be presented with, if any. That decision will be made when biopsy & scan results come back and give a clearer picture into what's going on.

    Hope it helps.

  • Thank you for responding Riley. I feel I have my head around things more than I did in my previous post. Sending you my very best wishes for your future treatment, 37 is no age and I'm sure it has been a very difficult time for you. I am having a CT scan on Friday( not an MRI as I said earlier )so we will see what that brings.Take good care

  • Hi. Hope things are looking up for you, I had a polyp removed today and I was just wondering if they gave you any indication the polyp could have been malignant? I was discharged with just a piece of paper so didnt even get to talk to anyone about the findings x
