Waiting for ultrasound

Hi all, this is my first time posting and I'm honestly so anxious.

I've just turned 24 (had my GP appt on my birthday, yay) and I'm currently having a breast lump investigated.

GP said she wasn't too worried as it was firm rather than hard and didn't seem to be tethered to the skin etc, so I'm booked for a private ultrasound today. She suspects a lipoma or fibroadenoma.

However, I'm still absolutely terrified. It doesn't move and that's a real sticking point for me as ik benign lumps usually move easily. It's smooth and not all that big - I've poked and checked it so much that there's a huge bruise over it on the skin now!

Anyone able to share any stories of going through this at a young age?

  • Hello stressedandtryingtowork,

A warm welcome to Cancer Chat! That was unfortunate having your GP appointment on your birthday - happy birthday by the way; you are certainly very young and it sounds like your GP is not overly worried. How did your ultrasound go by the way? Did they tell you anything or are you just waiting for results now? I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be fine.

The poking and prodding is something many of our members will be able to relate to - it's easy when worried about something to poke at it and check it again and again. I hope the bruise is gone now!

I hope that you will hear from other members of our forum who have been through something similar at a young age and that they will share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, thanks for getting back to me! I had a private ultrasound and they said they weren't concerned and nothing was suspicious. However, my GP wants to go through the results in a follow up appointment - is this normal?

  • It could be that it's a cyst or an abscess or something like that, and they can be lanced, obviously that's just a suggestion but please don't worry, if everything has come back with no concern then you are OK, mine was classed as an area of concern which has turned out to be early stage breast cancer. So I really wouldn't worry, I know it's hard but you are OK, the ultrasound would definitely have shown a problem if there was one, so the appointment sounds like it's just a follow up, maybe to even put you on antibiotics or something, I do understand how you feel but you will be ok xx
