Newly diagnosed 78 year old mother, breast cancer, no surgery due to risks

My 78 year old Mum was diagnosed with a small hormonal breast cancer in January, she is 78, with a pacemaker and overweight.  She was offered medication to stop the hormones only or the medication. and surgery and then radiotherapy,  She was told the medication would only work for 5 years or so and then she would need surgery and would obviously prefer to have surgery younger than older.  She was due to have surgery next week but they have now cancelled as they are worried she won’t survive the anaesthetic.  We have a meeting next week with the consultants, where we will find out more.  But does anybody have any experience of this.  Is the medication enough on its own.  Obviously I am glad they are taking it seriously and we want her to survive the operation, but what hope is there.    Many thanks everybody

  • Hi Leskey,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of the situation with your Mum. Unfortunately I'm not able to advise on this, but I wanted to send a reply to you to give your post a little boost, so hopefully you'll then get more replies.

As you have a meeting with the medical team coming up, be sure to maximise this appointment by asking anything you want to, and making a note of the answers, to get all the information you need.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
