Hi Johnsh,
Yes, this is normal. A Stage 0 melanoma (or melanoma in-situ) hasn't grown below the dermis so it has a 99.9% chance of not spreading.
Up until recently only the initial excision was carried out as they were happy that it had all been removed, but the guidelines then changed. A Wide Local Excision (a wider margin of tissue is removed from the affected area) is a 'belt & braces' procedure and, as mentioned before, 99.9% of Stage 0 patients get clear results. The waiting time for the WLE at present, regardless of Stage, is anything up to 14 weeks. Please take comfort in knowing that the initial excision removed the whole melanoma and the chances of a stray cell being found in the surrounding tissue is infinitesimal.
I hope this helps. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,
Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
