Diagnosed with melanoma stage 1a -further treatment

Hi,

I've been diagnosed with melanoma (stage pT1a) and the mole was removed with a margin of 3.5mm. I was so stressed about the surgery, so I did it in my home country. I live here, so I thought it would be good to see the doctor here. I live in Bristol. Also I know someone who had a surgery there and skin flap looks amazing.I went to see GP and I asked him if I can be referred to that hospital and he said no. He referred me to a different one. I'm stressed as if I need a wider excision I want to make sure it is done by someone who specialise in facial skin cancer. I'm not sure if I am going to have another surgery or not (apparently 5mm is a minimum-to be safe). I already have a big skin graft.

As a patient, do I have right to choose which hospital I want to go to for a consultation regarding my histology results?

Thank you.

Monika

  • Hi Monika,

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused. You had the initial removal & diagnosis in your home country but you live in Bristol? Is the hospital you wish to have the Wide Local Excision in your home country or in the UK but not local to Bristol?

My understanding is that a GP cannot refer you to a hospital outside England (not even to Wales, Scotland or Ireland). Sometimes a GP cannot even refer you to a hospital in another Trust area.

Plastic surgery for facial melanoma is usually carried out by a plastic surgeon who only deals with facial surgery - they are very good, ensuring that the wound is neat & will heal very well with the minimum of scarring. The local hospital in your area has a very good reputation for melanoma care. You may, however, want to speak to the nurses helpline at Melanoma Charity for Professionals, Patients & Public - Melanoma Focus who may be able to answer your question.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
