Thyroid cancer

Hello.

I felt a lump in my neck around August and went for an ultrasound. The GP called and said I had a suspicious nodule 1.1 x 1.2 cm and needed to be referred and to have a FNA. They struggled but got a biopsy which can back indeterminate, so it was recommended that because I’m male and 40, the best action was to have a hemithyroidectomy. I was told that I had 20 - 30% chance of it being cancer and not to worry. I had my hemi on the 6th Feb. All went well, scar is healing very well and minimal pain. I had a follow up booked for 19th Feb but unfortunately the results hadn’t come in yet and they asked if it was OK if they called me between 10 and 12. I said yep no problem expecting good news because surely it wasn’t anything sinister, they would have told me by now.

12 o clock came, then 1. So I called the hospital and was told they would chase up the Dr and he’d call me. About an hour later he called and he said that they had been trying to get hold of me since 9.30 and they’d left a voicemail. He had but strangely I had no notification. Anyway, he said I will need more monitoring  and ultrasounds because they had found cancer.

I feel a bit silly because I suppose it was a bit of shock or something but I wasn’t told what type it is or what’s going to happen and when. Just seemed all a bit routine.
My question is, do they send a letter with the results? Will my GP get a copy and I can speak to him?

Is this a common thing to have a diagnosis over the phone?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Oggy687,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this being a bit of a shock, and it's quite normal not to have asked more questions at the time, so no need to feel silly.

Usually a face-to-face appointment would be expected to discuss a diagnosis and potential next steps, however appointments over the phone are more common now, particularly when hospitals are dealing with large waiting lists. I would expect your GP to get updates on what has been happening, and so it would be a good idea to give your doctor a call soon to try to get some more information.

I hope you're able to hear more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
