Stage 1 Lung Cancer - aftercare and survival

Hello. My mum has recently been diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer, she is having surgery in 2 weeks to remove part of her lung. I was away for her doctors appointments and she does not speak to me much about the treatment and aftercare, i think she is trying to protect me but i would really like a realistic answer on what to expect for her recovery, survival etc. i know this is difficult without more details of the type of cancer, all she said was they caught it early enough to remove it but she won't know if she needs further treatment (presumably chemo) until they test it.

My Grandad had a whle lung removed due to cancer but he passed away a year later which i think is why i am quite scared but i want to know the truth of the situation so i can prepare and help her as much as possible.

Thank you to anyone who reads/answers this, sending big love to everyone out there battling the devil that is cancer.

  • Hello Mandy65,

I hope that your mum's lung cancer surgery is a success and that she recovers well from it. Our website has in-depth information on lung cancer where you will find out more about what to expect from her operation, possible treatment etc.. but obviously you will be able to find all the relevant facts once you have actually got all the results on the type of cancer, the treatment options which might be available to her and it might still take a bit of time for you to be given all this important information.

The fact that she was diagnosed at stage 1 is rather encouraging. On this page , you will find out exactly what it means to be diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer and if you have any questions don't hesitate to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and they will be happy to tell you more about lung cancer.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been affected by lung cancer, who have had the same surgery as your mum and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
