AML

I was diagnosed with AML 4 weeks ago. Both my sons and myself are in deep shock and really struggling g to cope with the diagnosis and the prognosis. One of my sons has long term addiction issues. he feels the stress he's caused  me gas contributed to me developing AML.

I try to reassure him but he's distraught. I fear fir bith of us but particularly fir him if ive passed on thru this disease.  I really don't know how we're all going to cope. life has turned into a nightmare beyond words. I'm really scared....

  • Hello Neerod,

I am so sorry to hear about your recent AML diagnosis and that the diagnosis has come as a shock to you and your sons. It's really sad too that one of your sons is blaming himself and his addiction issues for your diagnosis - you are right to try and reassure him. There is useful information on risks and causes of acute myeloid leukaemia which I hope will be helpful in understanding the risk factors involved. Our nurse helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on this free number 0808 800 4040 if there is anything you want to know about AML.

It is normal to be scared when faced with this new diagnosis and not knowing exactly what it will entail - there is still a lot of uncertainty and probably questions racing through your mind at the moment. I hope that you will get to have an appointment soon about what your treatment plan might be and this will be a good opportunity to ask questions - do write them down so you don't forget ahead of your appointment.

I hope that you will have the opportunity on the forum to talk to others who have been diagnosed with AML - I had a little look for you for recent threads which might be relevant or of interest and thought I would mention  's thread about her father in law's diagnosis. Feel free to respond to it if you wish and I hope that you will get to hear from the experiences of other members who have been affected by AML.

We're thinking of you during this difficult time and wanted you to know you are not alone and that we are here for you to help you get through this difficult time of uncertainty after a recent diagnosis.

    Best wishes,
