Diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Cancer - confused about why I'm not having pre-operation treatment

Hi

I was diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer on Tuesday, it's all a blur, I had an mri scan on Wednesday.

I have received an appointment with the anesthetic clinic at the end of the month, stupid question but does it sound like I am having a mastectomy as I remember the consultant saying that would probably be the best option.

I can't understand why I am not having pre operation treatment.

Sorry to ask.

  • Hi Pandamum,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Please don't apologise for your question - no question is too trivial, when you don't know the answer.

It sounds as if things haven't been explained to you properly, when they should have been. I suspect that your appointment with the anaesthetic clinic is your pre operation appointment. This is just to check your general health and make sure that you are fit enough to have surgery and anaesthetic.  Not everyone has treatment pre operation. It depends upon the type of cancer you have and the type and size of your tumours. Many have surgery first. At the time of your operation the tissue removed is sent for testing to determine that enough tissue has been removed and what will be the most effective treatment for you post-op. These results take about 1-2 weeks to come back after surgery.

If you are unsure about anything, don't hesitate to contact your breast care nurse. You may have to leave a message, but she will get back to you as soon as she can. The nurses are usually very helpful, if you don't understand something or need any information or advice. She will certainly be able to tell you which type of surgery you will be having.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi

    Thank you for your reply.

I will contact my nurse tomorrow, just for reassurance.

I know everyone is different. Thanks for the advice.

  • Hi Pandamum,

You should contact the nurse, as you deserve to know what is happening.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you yes I will, they may have said it but it was a shock and blur.

    Thank you x

  • This is all perfectly normal. Many of us are so overwhelmed by the diagnosis that we don't hear much more after that.
