Bone cancer from a blood test ??

Firstly forgive me if I come across a little blasé about this post.

My 83 Yr old mother ( and hypochondriac) had been for a blood test last week as she has a pacemaker and keeps having funny turns ( she's had these for 50 years with no reason or diagnosis.)  she went to her gp today for results  and she said he said    ' you have bone cancer '..

She's to have another blood test and urine sample   then he will refer her

My sister and I asked her   did he say you have   or could have.?  She said have.

Now surely a gp wouldn't just say it with out a nurse present  and my father was also in the waiting room...

And does one blood test pick it up ??

Thanks in advance

W

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Wasp although I'm sorry to hear your mother may have bone cancer.

Unfortunately I cannot say whether a blood test would be able to pick this up, but I hope this information we have about the tests used for diagnosing bone cancer will help.

We also have a very knowledgeable team of cancer nurses you can discuss this with on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m, so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this, do give them a call.

Hopefully some of our members will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon as well but in the meantime, we'll have our fingers crossed your mother misheard what the GP said and doesn't have bone cancer.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for the response

I think I'm more concerned about the fact she said she was told  this news alone  with no one but the gp   which triggerd alarm bells that she could be wrong.

Also surely a blood test following an ecg  wouldn't pick up bone cancer ?   More tests  biopsies would be needed ?

My mum is the healthiest  83 yr old !

    She's a history of 'undiagnosed illnesses '

She's not got any form of cancer   it was something she over heard     she's been tested for mgus..    her referral cancelled as her latest blood test showed nothing!

  • Ah, that's great news Wasp! What a relief.

    Best wishes to you both,
