Problem following recent lumpectomy following breast cancer diagnosis

Hello, not sure if anyone can offer any words of advice, but having been diagnosed with breast cancer and having a lumpectomy just before Christmas, I am feeling fortunate but in some pain. I have a lump come up in my armpit following the op and have been told it when I called the cancer care line that it should disperse. Has anyone experienced this and is there anything I can do to ease the pain that comes with the lump? Thank you

  • Hi Milliemou,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am not a doctor, but this sounds like the lump that I experienced after breast surgery. It turned out to be a Seroma. These pockets of fluid tend to build up and fill a cavity, where breast tissue has been removed.  Why not phone your specialist breast care nurse? This is what she is there for. Sometimes, they have to aspirate the fluid to give you relief, but they are not always keen to do this, as the fluid often builds up again. It is normal to let them disperse naturally, however, if it is sore, chat to your nurse about it. I got instantaneous relief, as soon as my fluid was removed.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you so much. I’ve just realised you have to reach out for information/advice. I tried calling the nurse but didn’t get beyond the triage person. I will try again and be a bit more insistent! I’m very grateful for your response and hopefully it will sort itself out soon.

  • Hi Milliemou,

You usually get through to an answering machine. If you leave your name, address, date of birth & telephone number, they will usually get back to you as quickly as they can. If you get the triage person again, tell them that you are having problems after the surgery you had before Christmas and they should put you through, or pass on a message.

Never be afraid to ask for advice - we are all here to help  and support one another. If you have a problem, there's almost certainly someone here, who has had personal experience of the same thing.

I hope that it all settles for you soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
