Breast Cancer therapeutic mammoplasty operation for ER+ PR+ HER borderline negative invasive carcinoma

Hi everyone,

I’m 44 and I was diagnosed on 16th October with a 3cm invasive carcinoma in my upper inner right breast. I also had a suspicious calcification in the outer part of my right breast that was biopsied and said to be stage zero in situ which meant it needed to be removed also. From the initial appointment in breast clinic to my operation it was 9 weeks and 3 days. I was really nervous about the prospect of surgery having never had a general anaesthetic before however I wanted to post to reassure anyone else in a similar situation.

So it’s day two after having therapeutic mammoplasty which involved a lift and reduction to the right breast, removing the cancer and taking the sentinel lymph nodes plus a lift and reduction to the left breast for asymmetry. I was operated on at 3pm and was in recovery at 7:45 pm. Initial pain was felt underneath my breasts but this subsided with paracetamol overnight. I stayed in hospital overnight and was home by 3pm the following day. At home I’ve been given paracetamol and codeine and have slept well (ish) on a v shaped pillow. I have also managed the exercises as it’s noticeable how stiff you feel straight away. The pain is more uncomfortable and sore than excruciating and very manageable with slow, gentle movements.

I have to wait around 6 weeks for results and will then find out if chemo is needed as well as radiotherapy and tamoxifen. As my tumour was grade 3 (fairly aggressive) and considering my age chemo has been mentioned but not confirmed.

Is there anyone else in a similar situation?

  • Hi Ann-Marie,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am glad to hear that your operation is now behind you and I hope that you are not too uncomfortable. Make sure that you do your exercises regularly, as this makes a big difference to your recovery. You will naturally be anxious to get your post-surgery results in the new year. The six week wait should give you time to recover, before they decide on any treatment, but that should come fairly soon after you get your results.

Many of us here have been on this journey. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and I am still leading a bust life, 14 years after diagnosis. Hopefully, you will too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply and Merry Christmas. I think the discomfort is manageable with paracetamol and I’m now nearly 4 full days post surgery so hoping that’s a good sign.
I have been doing the exercises consistently from the day after surgery. It was noticeable how stiff I felt the following day which really surprised me.
I get the drains removed hopefully on Wednesday and as I have pico (battery operated) dressings I believe they will be removed too. I do feel nervous about this but will be glad to have them out.

  • Hi Ann-Marie,

I am glad to hear that your pain is manageable with Paracetamol. You may find the breast getting a little sorer now as the wound starts to contract, but this is normal and will soon go away. I am sure that you are keen to have the drain out and the dressing removed./replaced. The Pico dressing should be easily removed.

Please let us know how you get on. I hope that you had a lovely Christmas.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
