Skin cancer microsatellites

Hi everyone, I had a lentigo meligna removed via excision from my cheek. Initial biopsy revealed it was deeper than first thought. Had a wider excision and the 2nd biopsy revealed microsatellites.  I was told this over the phone and was a bit overwhelmed and didn't really get a chance to ask any clarifying questions. I now have a Consultation early next year but would like to know what type of questions I should be asking re next steps, treatment options and prognosis. Should I be pushing for an MRI or PET scan and maybe local lymph node biopsy or removal ?

  • Hi Xavi,

Have you been given the details of a specialist nurse you can contact so you can ask these questions before your appointment? If not, look at the dermatology department on your hospital website & see if the nurses details are there.

Much will depend on whether the depth has gone into the epidernis & whether the micro satellites were there or still in the dermis. If it grew into the dermis it's now a Lentigo Maligna Melanoma and this will determine the next course of action.

I will send you a friend request. If you accept it we can chat by private message. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hi Angie thanks for your reply. It was the specialist nurse that phoned me. As I said it took me by surprise so didn't know what questions to ask. I now have another call with the specialist nurse 2 days prior to the hospital consultation and with the info you've provided and via some clearer thoughts I'm now in a position to ask clarifying questions.
