Dad - Pancreatic Cancer

Hello everyone -

my dad has been diagnosed with Stage 2 Pancreatic cancer at 61. He has lost loads of weight, been struggling with pain and he has been told that there are possible mets on his liver. He goes for a liver biopsy Tuesday. If the nodules on his liver are indeed cancer, surely he can’t be at Stage 2, wouldn’t that be Stage 4?

He has been offered 6 months of chemotherapy, but won’t operate.
Already allocated a MacMillan nurse. He has been put on Oramorph for the pain.

we have no information in terms of prognosis, but after a rough few years with cancer throughout my family I’m prepared for the worst. I would like an idea of how long he may have though if anyone has any experience in this?

Also been recommended genetic testing for myself, as Paternal Uncle died of Oesophageal Cancer 7 years ago, paternal grandmother of kidney cancer spread to lungs 2 years ago and paternal grandfather of bile duct cancer 6 years ago. It has literally wiped out my family.

I feel harsh when I say, “I know the drill, cancer leads to death” but that’s my experience of it, and I understand pancreatic is one of the worst you can get, especially if it’s spread. I’d just rather know how long we’re looking, I don’t think at this stage it will be curable at all.

  • Sorry paternal grandfather bile duct cancer 6 months ago - diagnosis to death was 24 days.

  • Hello ducky9027

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis and the uncertainty that you are all facing at the moment. Hopefully, tomorrow's liver biopsy will bring more clarification and the team will be able to confirm once they have the results what stage your Dad's cancer is at. Once they have a clearer picture they will be better able to talk with you about the prognosis for your Dad and what treatment options may be offered.

We know that for many people this period of uncertainty can be difficult. Given the impact that cancer has had on your wider family, it's understandable that you feel the way you do and may have questions and concerns, both regarding your Dad and your own health. If you think it may help to talk things through with one of our team of nurses you're most welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can.

I hope that you get some clarity over the coming weeks.

Sending you all my best wishes,
    Jenn
