Right side hemi-colectomy

Hi. This procedure has been recommended by my consultant (above endoscope removal) but it sounds really scary- not just the standard risks from a major operation but the impacts afterwards. I would welcome advice or experience from anyone who’s had the procedure or knows someone who has to try and give me some peace of mind. Many thanks.

  • I had a right sided hemi colectomy just 5 months ago.  I am 73.  I was very anxious also.  the consultant spelt out all the possible other procedures and dangers of the surgery. and also the consequences that would likely occur if i chose not to have the surgery.  he drew diagrams and answerred all my questions .  I felt trust in his judgement and the team of people who would assist him.  still i was fearful.  I think its normal to be afraid. I am here 5 months later and my bowel has healed. Yes, recovery was not all plain sailing but I at this moment will say It Was Worth It.  I would recomend that you ask if you can have a colorectal nurse assigned to you, that you can ring for support and to answer any of your questions. The support and treatment has been phenomenal on the NHS despite their workload.  Only you can decide.  I am glad i made this decision.  am on chemo now till Feb 24 which not every one needs.  talk to your professionals.. good luck.

  • Casanwy, thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it. I do have a nurse assigned to me and she’s been great but can’t speak from personal experience so it’s helpful to hear from someone who’s had this op. Am hoping to speak directly to the consultant in due course to discuss.

Best wishes to you for a full recovery.

  • Your welcome.  I am optimistic about recovery most of the time so onwards and upwards.  Take good care of yourself and allow others to help and support you. C
