More surgery

ILC breast cancer. Had my lumpectomy and full node clearance on 29th September. Had results on 1st November. Was 57mm not 29mm. Only in 1/15 nodes. Need more surgery as in the margins. So disappointed and been told I will have to have chemo :( 6 months and radiotherapy. Not the results I wanted. X

  • I’m sorry to hear you need to get more surgery. X. I had my surgery on tues and they took 3 nodes and some skin off my breast to check margins. So I will now have to wait for these results as I had it in my head that I’d only be getting radiotherapy.  But I am now going to have to think differently with what you have been told and just wait to see what is said.  X

  • The waiting game is horrible isn’t it. Yeh I didn’t think I would need chemo as only one node involvement but said they wanna do six months of it. Good luck with results hun x

  • Hi Kirstymarie,

I am so sorry to hear that your margins were not clear and that you need more surgery. This is not the sort of news that anyone wants. However, I thought that telling you my story might convince you that this is the right thing to do. I had a lumpectomy and when I went for my results the surgeon told me that the pathology results indicated that he hadn't achieved a clear margin. However, he assured me that he had noticed this at the time and had taken more away- definitely enough to get a clear margin. As a result, he said that there was no need for further surgery. I took Tamoxifen for one year and almost a year to the date of my first surgery, I found another lump in the same area as the original one.

I then had a double mastectomy and changed to Letrozole for a further 6½ years. I was told that this was a second primary cancer of the same type and stage, as the original, but I cannot quash my suspicion that this was the original cancer back again. Of course, we'll never know, but if I had the chance again, I would insist on further surgery - the benefit of hindsight is a great thing! They removed 6 of my lymph nodes the first time and all were clear. That was all 14 years ago now and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life and I'm sure that you will too. I can understand that you were hoping to avoid chemo and radiotherapy. Try to look at this year as a bump in the road. and it'll all soon be behind you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. In the meantime, remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
