Second cancer larynx voice box

Hi there to all

I first had this cancer diagnosed back in 2017 and finished treatment in March 2018

Five  years on its back on other side

and possibly also same side as last time

I have have been back and forward since January this year to gp who gave me two week urgent referral

here we are in November and have been told I need a larangectomy

I don’t know how to feel at this stage

except that I really don’t want this done

and I can’t have radiotherapy because been told you cannot have it again as I had six weeks last time

I’m also waiting on a different hospital appointment since March this year another two week referral from my own hospital

and the other appointment not  till December and another in February next year

this is due to incidental finding on my neck scan of a meningioma on my optic nerve which has almost lost my sight in right eye over this period of time

I don’t know if anyone can give me advice hope

but at this time I have nothing

I am off work sick again

and so fed up

and to all out there going through this awful journey or supporting someone

I send my prayers and thoughts to all

  • Hi there Buckie

yes we asked about chemotherapy but said was not a cure and wud only be used in palliative care which I was a bit like puzzled

and the radiotherapy effects I still have makes having more risky

they said they do a flap thing and fit a voice thing so I can talk they not mentioned that i mite not be able to talk or swallow problems seems only telling me the good bits as in a cure for it larangectomy.

uts a very hard decision to make land not helpful wen they don’t tell u much

I can’t see the other post you said someone answered do u have a link to it please .

and I am sorry u to are going through all of this and still having these problems as it’s the worst wen u lose voice and can’t communicate

I am having teeth removed tomorrow which were damaged due to the radiotherapy effects so wen I’m home from hospital I can then make up my mind and let them know wat I decide if anything it’s so hard

regards and stay strong and positive

    pauline

  • Hi Pauline19647

I think you should seek a second opinion on chemotherapy. It is a safe and trusted therapy.

    Macmillan Cancer Support

Understanding Cancer Of The Larynx (VoiceBox)

Is a booklet produced by Patient Information Forum.

In this it gives advice about radiotherapy, chemotherapy and laryngectomy. It talks you thru each one and gives support which ever therapy you decide upon.

Remember, it's your health and happiness that counts, don't be rushed into a decision.

Tell your doctor/surgeon you need more time to make a decision, get the booklet and have another read.

Your Hospital should help you get a copy from The Head and Neck Team, E.N.T. department.

    Kind regards,

    Buckie.

  • Hi Pauline19647

P.s. teeth can be damaged when lasering. Let them help you to sort it.

You probably have a lump the needs debulking.

    Kind regards.

    Buckie.

  • Hi Buckie

that’s the third opinion I have had so far and all say same I don’t know why and they said teeth were damaged by last radiotherapy in 2018 . Never mentioned about the laser I also had back then .
I won’t rush but I know they seem in a hurry to know what I want to do . Never knew be this hard .

thank you for replying as always
