Germ cell ovarian tumour

Hello everyone, back in may I was feeling very tired and bloated went to the doctor and they kept brushing it off just saying I’m a busy mom it’s normal. I’m 34 and have a 3 year old, in July I had a big lump pop out in my lower pelvic region again I went to the doctor and was told they don’t know what it is! They didn’t do bloods just booked a “urgent” ultrasound which was a month away!

A couple days later I went to a&e with kidney pain and urine retention, I had a ultrasound and they found a mass on my ovary it was 10x12cm I was referred for a mri and ct and blood tests my AFP levels where high but ca125 normal.

I was referred to a gynaecologist oncologist and surgery was discussed, at first they recommended a total hysterectomy with omentum removal and lymph nodes. My surgery was on the 19th September by this time I looked 8 months pregnant! On the morning of surgery they said they are going to keep one ovary and womb for me because I’m young and might want more children.

surgery went fine I had a incision from just below my chest to past my c-section scar, they Said it was 20x30cm and weighed 8.3kg.while I was in hospital they told me that everything looked good they couldn’t see anything suspicious and they 90 percent sure I didn’t have cancer!

fastforward 4 weeks I had my appointment and histology was back, my surgeon said I had a immature terrotoma germ cell tumour it was stage 1a but is high grade serous, he said he doesn’t know if I’ll need future treatment and his passed my case on to the germ cell team and they have the mdt meeting this Friday. I’m really nervous I thought everything was fine I wasn’t expecting cancer because they kept telling me they don’t think it’s cancer more likely boderline.

has anyone had this stage and grade? I don’t really understand it but what happened with you? Did you need chemo? I

  • Hello La34

I'm so sorry to hear that you've recently had surgery and that you're now waiting for the specialist MDT to meet today to decide what the next steps will be regarding the tumour that was removed.

Hopefully, the MDT will be able to give you some reassurance after their meeting. Did the Consultant tell you when you were likely to hear some news? Hopefully, it won't be too long after the meeting today.

We know that for many people this period of uncertainty can be difficult. The unknown can be a scary prospect to face and it's natural that you have questions especially as you've been on such a rollercoaster to get to this point. We do have some information on our website about germ cell ovarian tumours that might be of help but I'd encourage you to give our team of nurses a call and chat things through with them as well. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about the kinds of questions you might want to ask at your next appointment. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch La34 and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
