Confused by doctors

Hi, I’ve just come back from my first oncology appointment, this followed an appointment last week with a colorectal surgeon. I was told by the surgeon I would need chemo radiation before surgery, a 10 week wait after that treatment for surgery if the treatment had worked to shrink my lymph node, then 6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy afterwards. I went to my first oncology appointment to be told my tumour is only 2cm so she thinks I don’t need the chemo radiation at all? Why am I being told different things by different doctors, I’m really sad and confused and don’t know what’s going on??
please help if you understand why this is happening

Thank you

  • Hi Roosnann
Not a colon cancer patient but I have Brest cancer and am also a nurse practitioner although not a cancer expert
I had a similar experience were my surgeon who removed the lump and lymph nodes originally told me I would only need surgery and radiotherapy to then be told by the oncologist that they suggest 6 cycles of chemo it was shocking at the time
Doctors often change there opinions when they have more information from test results and some doctors are more careful than others
Do you have a nurse specialist you can call and discuss this with further as she/he  will have access to notes and be able to shed more light on this for you and .support you through this difficult time if not you could call the Macmillan nurses for support

I have decided to to have the chemo and am feeling much more positive
