Alison - cancer has returned, only option is chemo. What can I expect?

Hello, thank you for letting me join this group.

I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in November 2020, early stage. I had a full abdominal hysterectomy in January 2021, followed by 25 external radiotherapy and 2 brachytherapy treatments. I suffered from problems with my bladder and my bowels which increasingly got worse. For the past few months I also suffered from quite a lot of pain. After various scans and a biopsy, this week I was told that I had a recurrence in my pelvic lymph nodes. I have been told that chemotherapy is now the only option open for me. They took bloods, height and weight this week, and I have an appointment to see the oncologist on 24th of October.

This has actually come as a bit of a blow and I was wondering whether anyone could tell me what to expect. All I have been told so far is that there will be 6 cycles of treatment, 3 weeks apart. I’d like to know ant questions to ask at the consultation meeting, and how long after that am I likely to start treatment. I’m 56 years of age and also would like to know whether it would be feasible to carry on working.

Any advice that you could offer would be hugely appreciated.

Kind regards,

Alison.

  • Hi Alison,

You won’t be surprised to receive an “it all depends” response.

Each type of chemo has its own side effects and each patient experiences those side effects differently. For example, I was told that almost all patients on one of the three chemos I was given lost all their hair - but I didn’t lose much at all. I was also on a three weekly cycle and I found that after each infusion I needed to sleep for the best part of 24 hours. I was initially OK to work then but then, after the third round I was too tired and irritable to work.

Just write down all the questions you have (literally anything that’s worrying you) and, as importantly, write down the answers as we all forget things when we are stressed!

    Good luck
