U3 classification and THY3f FNA result

Hello,

this is my first time posting here, i recently received U3 classification on 2 nodules in my left and right side, the left side FNA came back as THY2 but the right side came back as THY3f and surgery was on the cards.

however my case went to the multi-disciplinary team and the radiologist disagreed with the U3 classification and said he would have graded them U2 in classification, they are now recalling my biopsy results to look at them again, how likely is it that they will get a different reading?

the whole thing is stressing me out.

  • Hi karen.m44,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be confusing and I'm sure the back-and-forth isn't too helpful in terms of any worries.

I'm not too sure how likely it is that they will get a different reading. Once you hear back again, you should have the opportunity to speak to your doctor for them to explain any decisions taken. If you have doubts or concerns at this point, you can always ask for a second opinion.

I hope you hear more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi there, have you heard back? Did they give you a different grading?

i experienced something slightly similar but not exactly. I have 2 nodules on either side of my thyroid. First doctors did the biopsy of one nodule that they didn’t like - it came back as thy3f. MDT recommended hemi thyroidectomy. I was in total shock and asked for second opinion. In another hospital they didn’t check my nodule but were concerned about the nodule on the other side which came back as thy3f too. In that very day when I had the biopsy the radiologist and pathologist said to me your nodule looks benign to me. In couple of hours I got a different result. I really wonder how they reach a conclusion? Is it a matter of opinion? If so it’s very subjective. Because they identified two nodules with thy3f plbiopsy result - they now recommend TT. I’m devastated

  • Hello, yes it was graded the same again THY3f and they removed it and it was cancerous, glad it's out now, I still have my left side and have lump in that one as well but was benign when they biopsied that. Honestly don't take any chances just get them out and get sorted, surgery is ok, takes a few days to recover and 2 weeks to fully recover but you'll be back in your feet in no time

  • Hello, yes I got the same result and ended up having it removed and it was cancer, better to be Safe than sorry if they are recommending removal just get it done

  • I’m sorry to hear it was cancer. Im glad to hear though that you receive quick!!
hiw did you manage to keep one side of thyroid? Did they do biopsy during the operation? My doctors recommended total thyroidectomy. I’m really scared of having to depend on a pill for life

  • My left side lump was benign when they biopsied it, better to be on a pill than have cancer growing in your neck that's how I looked at it, I may still need theoxine because I have thyroid disease, I am waiting to hear what my last bloods came back at. Are both your lumps THY3f or what grading are they?

  • It really is a matter of opinion as the multi disciplinary radiographer  said he thought mine was ok and would have only clased it as U2 and not U3 which is why I got the biopsy in the first place, if he had if been the first person to look at my thyroid lumps I would still have them ithe cancerous one in my neck which is quite a scary thought

  • Oh, so the biopsy on one was benign, but the other one thy3f. My nodules are on both sides and both are thy3f. Hence the TT. If I knew it were cancer I would go for surgery. In my case I do not have a diagnosis. That makes it very hard to make a decision. I’ve never in my life been on any medication.

I’m glad you’re doing well though

  • Yeah it's a tough decision, hard to know what's best, hope you get sorted

  • Hello, I'm new to this, very recently diagnosed and having thyroid removed and neck dissection tomorrow. I'm really anxious, so you have any tips how to help recovery?
