Waiting for petscan before treatment can start

I have after having mri scan with contrast, followed by a biopsy been diagnosed with locally advanced prostate cancer. I have had 1 soft tissue ct scan, 1 bone scan and now waiting for a petscan. What gives me a lot of anxiety is having to wait until after the petscan has been done before I can start taking the hormone tablets which I have been prescribed. I am petrified that whilst I am waiting, the cancer is aggressive and growing and could breakout from the prostate before I get the petscan. It real is scarey. It is now almost 3 months since diagnosis. If it breaks out and spreads I fear the worst.

  • Hello Edward_R,

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and hopefully you won't have to wait long for the PET scan. It might be worth getting in touch with your medical team and finding out how long the wait is likely to be for the PET scan and if it would hold things up for your treatment but I am sure they would not let the cancer grow and break out from the prostate before you get the scan and hopefully things will be moving fast now so that you can start treatment as soon as possible. It's important to share your fears and worries though so that they can listen to them and hopefully alleviate them.

There is information on our website on prostate cancer you might be interested in having a look at and you can find out more about what to expect from the PET scan on this page. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and you are welcome to ring their helpline if you would like to talk things through with them at any stage or have any questions about the PET scan and your treatment plan.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our community who have had a prostate cancer diagnosis before and that they will come and share their experience with you.

Wishing you the very best and that you are able to start your treatment very soon without any delays.

    Best wishes,
