Horrible wait for score and decision from Oncotype DX test

Hi everyone,

I’m having a bit of tough time and just curious to know who else might have been in a similar situation. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer end of July after a routine mammogram, my first one (I’m 52). I had no symptoms so it was a complete shock. Biopsy showed one tumour at grade 1, 35mm.

On ultrasound it looked like I had two masses and clear lymph nodes, so I has surgery end August, a lumpectomy and bilateral reduction, along with a standard sentinel node biopsy. When the pathology came back the tumour went up to grade two, but the tumour size was smaller at 14, the other mass wasn’t cancerous. Margins all clear etc. However two out of the three lymph nodes (the two sentinel ones), have cancer. Again another shock. It’s ER and PR positive and HER2 negative.

The surgeon asked me if I wanted a lymph node clearance, but I didn’t want to, I have MS and already problems with my arm - and another surgery is too risky. Instead they have sent away for the Oncotype DX test to be done. The waiting is horrible. if it’s high, them I need chemo, if it’s low then I don’t. I guess what worries me is the possibility of an intermediate score and the awful decisions as a result.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation and has advice? Feel like in a bad dream right now. Thank you. .

your story is identical to mine , but my diagnosis was July 22

i had the full node removal as 2 nd operation too and also had the Oncotype DX my shots came back low

your diagnosis is same as mine

good luck my results come back in 10 days keep chasing they say 3 weeks xxx love Lara x

  • Hi Lara, thanks for sharing your experience. How are you now and presume you didn’t have chemotherapy? What did your score end up being?

I’m not going to have the full node removal due to the MS complications, so it puts more emphasis on the Oncotype score and next steps…radiotherapy and hormone therapy for sure, maybe chemo if the score is high. Good to know your score came back a bit earlier x

tge score was under 10 surely yours will be similar same cancer sane node involved sane time of year crazy but I was one year before , I now take tamoxifen since nov I’m 49 xx.

  • Hi, just an update. After initially refusing the full node clearance I’ve been persuaded to have it by the oncologist. Basically 2/3 of the sentinel nodes have cancer and they also have extra capsular spread. The team at the hospital feel strongly that in my situation a full node clearance is the best option, along with the Oncotype dx. The results of both will guide next steps and the surgery is on Tuesday this week. Feeling really much more worried about this surgery than the mammaplasty. Clearly my surgeon thought radiotherapy would have been the best option, but the oncology team disagreed.
