Partial glossectomy

I've recently been diagnosed with T1NOMOSCC, squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. It's right at the back on the left side, 8mm and runs laterally. I've had my CT, MRI and X-rays, I've met with my surgeon, but I'm finding it really hard to get any information on this. I will be having a partial glossectomy with dental extractions, and I have NO idea how long it will take to recover, what foods I'll be able to eat, how long it'll be before I can talk properly again, will I even be able to talk properly again? What will my face look like? Will it worry my 5yr and 2yr old grand-daughters (they are the light of my life). There is so much information and images of of bowel, breast, cervical cancer etc, but so little about glossectomies. Has anyone here had one, or know anything about them? xxxx

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Grazer128 although I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis and for the worries your upcoming partial glossectomy is causing.

It must be very frustrating not being able to find any information about this but our team of cancer nurses should be able to help. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and will do all they can to answer your questions.

Hopefully some of our members who have had this surgery will share their experiences and advice with you soon as well.

We're thinking of you Grazer128 and wishing you all the best with your surgery when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

  • I've had a partial glossectomy speech was a little slurred at first but was more or less back to normal within a few weeks and my face looked exactly the same. You'll be given access to a dietician and a speech therapist. You don't mention if radiotherapy or reconstruction will also be in your treatment plan which would have a bearing on recovery time ?

  • That's reassuring, grateful thanks! I'll be having radiotherapy afterwards x

  • How many sessions of radiotherapy and will you be having a neck dissection?

  • I don't actually know, I'm on the urgent cancer pathway and information has been hard to get. I'm Stage 1 thank goodness to it hasn't spread to my lymph nodes so no neck dissection thankfully. My consultant said partial glossectomy and radiotherapy to follow as needed x

  • Well, one partial glossectomy later (I had my op on the 17th October) and here we are! My lesion was right at the back of my tongue on the left hand side and my surgeon was amazing. I'd been warned that because it was so far back he'd probably have to go in through my jaw, but I woke up, face intact!! So, here is how it's going for me, just in case there's anyone else out there with back-of-your-tongue cancer. I saw my dentist for a routine appointment, I mentioned my tongue. It's so far back that she really had to poke about to find it, spotted it and said 'Lisa, I'm taking photos and sending them to the hospital'. She was right, they phoned me that afternoon and booked me in the next day for an excision biopsy which came back positive for SCC. Met my surgeon, had my op on the 17th October, it only took a couple of hours! It feels strange. The first few days in hospital wasn't easy, you've had a large part of the back of your tongue removed, stitches everywhere scratching your epiglottis and making you gag, you can't talk, you in no way can swallow, you've got a feeding tube up your nose and down your throat, and an enthusiastic team of newbies doing meerkat impressions around your bed. My after-care was faultless, I can't thank the nurses enough! I'm recovering rapidly, the stitches are still there and will be for another couple of weeks, yes my speech has been affected but I'm confident that with practice it'll sound better. I'm still very restricted in swallowing stuff, but small spoons in small amounts regularly, sips of liquids, improving daily. My energy is starting to trickle back, I hadn't realised just how tired I've been over the last 18 months while this thing has been growing in me, it's been cut out and I can feel the difference, sounds hokey but it's true! So, to summarize, it's hard, but it's nowhere near as bad as you think it's going to be! xxxxx
