Kidney Cancer - Stage 4

Hey all,

My dad - a wonderful man - started losing weight last year, noticably. He had scans in March and we were told all fine! Everything great!

Everything was not great. They missed cancer in his kidneys, that has now spread to his lungs and is in his lymph. It's not clear where things went wrong, but there is a focus on NHS management missing something.

Since then, every day has been a battle with the NHS. Calling up constantly to get his scans in, his biopsies in, being told that we "have to just wait" and "a few weeks isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things" after they allowed his cancer to spread for 6 months.

I get it's not a great diagnosis, but we're trying to focus on the positives.

I'm doing a diet overhaul for him, seeing how he can keep active etc.

He'll hopefully be doing immunotherapy soon.

I would really appreciate advice on:

1) what others are doing to help aid their response to treatment? Just in case I'm missing anything

2) If anyone knows of advanced treatments elsewhere from their research for kidney cancer

3) How people generally react to immunotherapy

4) If anyone has had a late stage diagnosis and managed to live with it and manage it for a period of several years?

Thank you all, sorry we all find ourselves on this site. x

  • A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat Maria although I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.

The difficulties you're having with the NHS must be very vexing but I'm glad you're focusing on staying positive and concentrating on how you can help your dad whilst you wait.

Hopefully some of our members who have been on this journey will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our cancer nurses in the meantime, you can contact them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. You can ask them the questions you've included in your post and they will do all they can to assist you and point you in the right direction.

I hope this information we have about immunotherapy is helpful as well but for further information and advice it may be worth getting in touch with Kidney Cancer UK.

We're thinking of you Maria and will have our fingers crossed your dad doesn't have to wait too much longer to start his treatment.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
