High Grade DCIS

I have been diagnosed today as having high grade DCIS which was found on a mammogram. I know DCIS is a Stage 0 cancer but the high grade part bothers me... surely this makes it more serious?? More likely to return? More likely to become invasive? Any input welcomed.

  • Hi Sarah-F,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  DCIS is an early form of breast cancer and treatment aims to remove the cancer, before  it develops the ability to spread. Do you know what grade your DCIS is? Treatments vary depending on the extent of the DCIS and where it is within the breast(Breast Cancer Care). Have you discussed any treatment options yet? Please put your faith in your care team, who will do everything they can to prevent this from spreading or returning. Treatments have come a long way in the past few years. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer and have had 2 bouts myself. I was diagnosed 14 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life and I'm sure that you will too.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Sarah,

I’ve also just had a diagnosis of high grade dcis as well following a routine mammogram. Mine is 4.6cm.  High grade means it is faster growing and is possibly more likely to become invasive if left untreated.  The dr at the clinic thinks I’ll need a mastectomy as I’ve previously had surgery for invasive breast cancer and dcis 7 years ago.  I am pleased it is just dcis this time as this is not invasive and hasn’t spread yet.  A friend of mine recently had dcis which was treated with a lumpectomy, radiotherapy and Tamoxifen for 5 years.  It is very treatable and considered a pre-cancer.

As Jolamine says, put faith in your care team as they will do what is best for you.

    Take care.

  • Hi Michelle,

I am so sorry to hear that you are facing this for a second time, but glad to hear that there is no sign of the invasive cancer and that it is just DCIS. I had a double mastectomy second time around and have coped well in the past 13 years since. I hope that all goes well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

  • Thank you Jolamine, I really appreciate your reply. I find out on Friday what the treatment plan is,  I will get in touch with you again if that’s ok after I know as I would like to find out more about having a mastectomy from someone who has been through it.  The only person I know who had one passed away a few years ago sadly.

    Thanks again x

  • HI Imasurvivor,

I'm glad that you're due to discuss treatment on Friday. Make sure to write down any questions you have prior to your appointment. If you are taking someone with you, give them a duplicate copy and ask them to write down the answers. You'll be amazed how much you forget as soon as you leave the consultation. I am more than happy to talk to you about having a mastectomy any time.

    Kind regards,
