Barretts Oesohagus

I have just had a gastroscopy and have been told I have Barretts, at first I was sedated so it did not sink in but now the worries and doubts are setting in.  I have close family members who have died from Cancer.  Just wondered what happens next. Is it treatable, can it be stopped from becoming cancer or will they just wait until it is cancer.  I feel very much on my own my partner has said whats up with you….. you have just had a camera in your throat it is not cancer yet get over it.

  • Hi Sandy,

The good news is that your condition has been detected at the earliest possible stage. It will now be monitored and, if it shows any signs of developing into cancer, treatment can be started as soon as possible. Still worrying news to receive though.

This may not seem like good news at the moment but the majority of people with cancer of the oesophgus are diagnosed at a much later stage when treatment options are more limited and survival and recovery rates are lower. From a practical point of view, I’ve found that using a wedge pillow to lift my head in bed reduces the frequency and severity of acid reflux flare ups during the night. Reflux causes Barratt’s.

I hope your treatment plan is agreed soon and that you make a full recovery.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Thanks Dave thats really good of you to reply. I will take your advise and buy a wedge at the moment I am sleeping on 4 pillows   I am trying to have a positive outlook at least I know now and can try and do something about it
