SCC diagnosis

Hi everyone,

I feel in complete shock to be writing this but today I received a diagnosis of SCC. I had the operation 2.5 weeks ago and had convinced myself all would be fine. I am 36 and have two beautiful young children. I have so many thoughts going through my mind what if it comes back? What if it spreads? Will this make me more likely to get other cancers? Can I ever go in the sun again? Any advice on how to get through the next few days would be greatly welcomed I’m not really sure on what to do with myself.

take care,

  • Hello R,

I am sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with SCC. It's normal to have all these thoughts racing through your head at the moment but as you can read on our website in the section about SCC, "SCCs don't often spread. If they do, it's most often to the deeper layers of the skin. They can spread to nearby lymph nodes and other parts of the body, but this is unusual."

Feel free to give our cancer nurses a call on this free number 0808 800 40404 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and I am sure they will be happy to answer your questions.

There have been quite a few members who posted before on our forum and who have been diagnosed with SCC before - I remember for example this recent thread by  who is a similar age to you and was recently diagnosed with SCC and was also worrying about the likelihood of it spreading. It sounds like you would have quite a lot to share with one another as you are both asking yourselves similar questions. It does help sometimes to talk to someone else who has had the same diagnosis and who will understand your fears better than anyone.

    Best wishes,
