SEVERE ORAL DYSPLASIA LASER TREATMENT

Had a biopsy Dec 22. Jan 23 diagnosis of 'severe dysplasia' of tongue and plan made for laser treatment.

Was told looking at a date 2 months away. Chase up phone calls said the laser machine was broken and they were having difficulty finding a laser.

Phoned PALS who told me a couple of days later a machine had been purchased and was waiting to be installed.

Now it's six months since my biopsy. It wasn't until my dentist referred me (AGAIN)  last week That I got an appt with maxillo facial dpt again. Was seen yesterday and the consultant was surprised and shocked t my dysplasia patch which had grown and rushed out of the room to get me another appt with the oncology surgeon for 2 days later. He said, "This has to be removed."

My concern is this -if the hospital knew there was a broken laser why didn't they advise me to have the procedure at a different hospital?

Why have I not been given regular checks to monitor progression of severe dysplasia?

Am I a political pawn and have I been used in order for my PALS complaint to get the dpt a new laser.

Have the dpt been negligent?

Thanks in advance, Jennifer.

  • Hello Tongueincheek

I'm so sorry to hear about all that you've been through over the past 6 months. It's understandable that you have questions and concerns about the way your care has been handled up until this point.

It might be a good idea to get back in touch with the PALS team to raise these concerns. Their role, as you may already know, is to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS. Hopefully they will be able to support you with getting answers to your questions and making sure that you are confident in moving forwards with the team responsible for your care.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I think from your post that your appointment with the oncology surgeon was either yesterday or today and I hope that that appointment has given you some reassurance.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
