Stage 2c Superficial Spreading Melanoma

Hi,

About 4 weeks ago, I had a growth removed from my jawline, which was Stage 2c Superficial Spreading Melanoma. A few weeks prior to getting the growth removed- visually I could see (about an inch away from the growth), a swollen (hard) spot under the skin- probably a lymph node.

If this is a cancerous lymph node and has been there for say 6-8 weeks, how likely is it to spread to the other lymph nodes nearby, and would this be the usual route of progression? I cannot feel any other swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Thanks,

TheGaz1982.

  • Welcome to the forum Gaz although I'm sorry to hear that the growth you had removed was cancerous.

I know this must be worrying but fingers crossed it hasn't spread anywhere else.

Unfortunately I can't answer the question you've asked in your post but our team of cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very insightful and will do all they can to put your mind at ease.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their experiences and advice with you soon as well.

  • Hi Gaz,

Unfortunately no one can say if this is a swollen node and if it is, what the likelihood is for it to spread within a given time frame. Some patients have aggressive spread, some have very slow spread and some have no spread at all. Personally it took 13 years for mine to spread from my mole removal to finding a swollen node.

Did you point out the lump when you had your excision? If your consultant isn't aware of it I would contact them rather than wait for your next appointment. I will send you a friend request - should you accept it we can then chat by pm.

    Good luck,

Angie, Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you for your reply- I have accepted your friend request.

When I went to get my growth removed, I forgot to mention the lump above it- however, it should have been easily noticeable. I haven't had a WLE yet as far as I am concerned- but when they took my growth out, they said there were 'clear margins'.

I guess everyone's situation is different- my growth grew rapidly in 2/3 months, but did not look sinister. Was your original mole stage 1? Hope you have been coping well since it returned.

    Thanks,

    Gareth.
