Just lost

My dear dad has had a CT which has shown 8cm mass on lung with invasion of pleura and mediastinum- T4 N3 M0, he had a letter about the 2 week referral system and is due to see a specialist on NHS next week. As everyone probably does, I have been scouring the internet based on the info from dads scan, came across Cyberknife, could only find 2 hospitals that offer it on the NHS but those and other options in London offer private treatment. An initial enquiry has indicated that the T4 staging means dad wouldn't be a suitable candidate but I found 2 clinic's in US so far who treat up to stage 4 even with local spreading of cancer, waiting for them to reply. I 'm worried that dad will be written off because he's 88, but prior to all this, you'd have thought he was 60, fit as a fiddle, never smoked or drank. Worried sick that they'll give us a short life span in appointment. I go between having hope, I know not curable but should be treatable to blind panic and breaking down. I'm going to write down all our questions based on the scan and research that I've done. Dad had a nodule found on his lung back in 2017 and they did last check-up scan in 2019 and said it hadn't grown so then scans stopped; I can't think about that as I could punch somebody. I know he may be offered other treatments, I won't give up whatever they say. You just feel so helpless.

  • Hello Linda63

I'm so very sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. Undoubtedly this is a difficult time for you all and it's understandable that you want to make sure your Dad is offered any treatment options that may be available to him.

It's a good idea to write things down ahead of the appointment. It can be easy to forget something when you're in front of the clinical team and it often helps to have a list if there are lots of things you want to ask.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can.

I hope that your Dad's next appointment brings some positive news for you all.

    Best wishes,
