Tamoxifen or Ovary removal and anastrozole

Hi me again :(

my oncologist has recommended ovary removal and anastrozole over tamoxifen due to me being in my 30s and having a hormone receptive cancer. She thinks it’s the best option for me but I’m terrified of the long term risks associated with ovary removal and also being thrown into a menopause plus the tablets and the side effects. I’ve researched and it’s made it worst. I don’t want to go into a menopause yet and the risks look so scary. I think all of it will really reduce recurrence but there are other big associated risks. she did say I could trial it with an injection to see how I got on first but recommended removal.

Can anyone that’s had the same situation or has more knowledge than me please help. Thank you.

  • Hello ahill

I'm sorry that you find yourself facing this decision about the best way forward with your treatment. It's understandable that you want to make the best long-term choice for you and that you have concerns about the option that is being recommended.

It's good to hear that you have the option to try an injection before making a decision about surgery. Hopefully this will give you the time you need to ensure you're making the right choice for you.

If you think that it may be helpful to have a second opinion then we have some information on our website here that may be of use to you. Alternatively, you're welcome to chat things through with one of our nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I'm sure they will be happy to help with any information and support they can offer.

I hope that whatever decision you make you feel that you're well supported by the clinical team. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
