Newly diagnosed with bowel cancer today

I had my first appointment with the consultant today. I didn't really get much in terms of answers from him as to how bad it is but was explained that I had bowel cancer that was also attached to my abdominal wall. I was wondering if anyone could explain what it means I don't know the stage of my bowel cancer just that I am going to be booked into surgery at some point and then go from there.

I had thought any cancer that had gone beyond the Colon was a stage 2 or 3 but it I wasn't made clear. I guess with me being on my own when I had the consult it was overwhelming and I may not have heard everything. I just thought I would get a written report telling me what the findings would be.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Nikki7t7.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis of bowel cancer and the uncertainty you're experiencing regarding the stage and implications of your condition. It can be overwhelming to process such information, especially when you're on your own during the consultation.

To gain clarity about your diagnosis, it's important to communicate your concerns to your medical team. Requesting a follow-up appointment or phone call to discuss the stage of your cancer and receive a more detailed explanation may work to get the information you need.

We have other members here who have experience with bowel cancer and I hope some of them will stop by soon to chat with you and offer support. There is also a page on our website with general information on bowel cancer if you feel like having a read.

Take care, and I wish you strength as you prepare for surgery and move forward with your treatment plan.

    Best wishes,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
