radiotherapy or surgery?

My mum has some cancer on her nose that can be treated with radiotherapy but now she is panicking about side effects and wondering if she should have the cancer cut out instead.  Is one option better than the other? The 3 spots are only small but she doesnt want to be disfigured by the surgery and skin grafts...

  • Hi Emmad,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your mum's dilemma. This is very much a personal decision and one that only your mum can make.  Help her to draw up a list of her concerns to discuss with her consultant, who will know what the statistics are for both treatments. I suspect that your mum would not have been offered radiotherapy alone, if it is not equally effective, but I am not a doctor.

I have had a mole removed from just under my right eye and the plastic surgeon did a marvellous job. He used such tiny stitches that the nurse had difficulty in removing them when I returned, but you can't see the scarring, as it is just in the fold at the corner of my eye. I expect that something similar could be done with the nose.

Whatever decision she settles upon, I hope that it's the right one for her.

Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
