Lumpectomy Results. What does this mean

Hi , got my results from lumpectomy last week. Just found out that the DCIS I have is ER negative. I've got an appointment with my oncologist next week to discuss further treatment plan. I'm I right in thinking this is not hormone receptor? I'm so confused xx

  • Hi Linz, that's right. Your cancer is not "fed" by oestrogen. Did they tell you if you have progesterone or HER2 receptors? These results will determine the best treatment plan for you, also based on the size of your tumour, whether it has spread to the lymph nodes, whether you are pre- or post-menopausal, etc. There's a very good book called "The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer" that I found really helpful and informative. It's a few years old now and I know a new edition is in the pipeline, but you may be able to find a second hand copy. Just bear in mind that some information may be out of date but it will give you the basics about the different types and sub-types of BC, how to cope with treatment, other aspects of breast cancer, etc. Macmillan also have comprehensive information here www.macmillan.org.uk/.../breast-cancer

I wish you all the very best and if you have any questions, feel free to fire away. Big hug, Amy xx

  • Hi Amy, thank you so much for your help. I'm 49 and not hit the menopause yet. Not sure about anything other than ER negative ? There must be more to My results than I took in. Appointment is with oncologist tomorrow so will listen more! I guess I was shocked, it's so much to take in xx
